From the moment you arrive at beautiful Bel Horizon, the dramatic ocean panorama unfolding before you will enchant and mesmerize day and night. On its hillside location in Upper Peter Bay, stately Bel Horizon overlooks a glorious fusion of azure Caribbean ocean, green islets and cays, and blue sky expanding for miles and miles to the horizon. This recently-completed five-bedroom luxury villa features an artful floorplan built on several levels.
Everyone gathers in the heart of Bel Horizon, the Great Room and the adjoining covered verandah looking over the pool, furnished with easy-living sofas and chairs. The convenient poolside wet bar offers an ice maker and mini-fridge. Also in this main pavilion is the gourmet kitchen, well equipped with two refrigerators, two dishwashers and custom cabinetry, with an alfresco dining terrace situated just outside to catch the cool trade-winds and showcase the breathtaking vistas beyond. A convenient Weber stainless steel gas grill sits just off the dining terrace. A pantry with a washer and dryer and the powder room are just off the kitchen and Great Room. The air-conditioned media room/home office is located just a few steps away, with its own bath. The living area of the Great Room shares space with elegant indoor dining; french doors open out to an arced terrace on the ocean side of the pavilion bordered by bronze railings; you'll have a bird's-eye view of the ever-changing views from this sitting area. Stairs lead from this terrace to the pool. An exterior staircase takes you up to Jost Suite, the main pavilion's sky-top bedroom. This air-conditioned king bedroom/bath suite features both a tiled indoor and an alfresco shower, commanding views, and plenty of cool island breezes from its lofty private verandah - Jost Suite cannot be seen from the pool, so it serves as a secluded romantic hideaway.
Below, an interior staircase in the main house leads down to two air-conditioned king bedroom/bathroom suites which are identical in size. Both the green Trunk Suite and the next-door Cinnamon Suite boast the famous St. John-style shell-and-stonework. Cinnamon Suite has a teak four-poster king bed; Trunk Suite's king four-poster bed is dressed in swags of white netting. Both bedrooms have screened french doors which open to private covered terraces bordering the main pavilion's sea-facing side; a walkway continues up to the pool and lawn levels. Also on this level is the air-conditioned exercise room, with a full bath with shower and a laundry room adjoining. The main pavilion is wonderfully designed so that covered walkways and verandahs encircle the entire pavilion, easily linking all rooms and verandahs to the pool deck, dining areas and to the bar. Bel Horizon has tremendous architectural interest; one grand area flows harmoniously into another, all graced by pleasing archways, pillars, graceful curves and stonework walls.
Bel Horizon's forth and fifth bedroom/bath suites are located in a separate pavilion just off the pool and small lawn areas. The blue air-conditioned Congo Suite features a king bed, a sitting area and a zebra rug. A few steps from Congo take you up to a charming covered round gazebo with cushioned seating and a ceiling fan, a quiet spot from which to savor the views of pool, ocean and island beauty; from this rotunda, a curve of stairs ascends to the green master Lovango Suite on the upper level of the pool pavilion. Lovango Suite features air conditioning, a four-poster king bed, a double vanity, both an indoor tiled shower and an alfresco stonework garden shower, and a generous covered balcony which looks out over the pool. From this pavilion it's just a few steps to the pool and a morning swim to start another perfect island day. The pool is a pleasing study in unique design: one end is bisected by a curlicued dividing wall set with a compass rose; one section is a shallow plateau where water is only six inches deep, joining a slightly-deeper sitting area. On the other end, serving the pool pavilion, are more steps into the pool - and in between is the integrated eight-foot hot tub, clad in stunning iridescent glass tile and overflowing into the pool. Two smaller waterfalls flanking the hot tub splash musically from garden planters into the pool. The pool deck offers chaise lounges for tanning, and steps down to a small green area of lawn edged by a tropical flora. Another stairway leads down to the air-conditioned exercise room just below the pool deck. The exercise room offers amazing views from the elliptical trainer and weight bench.
To one side of Bel Horizon is the caretakers' cottage, well screened from the main pavilion by canvas drapes and large palm trees. Caretakers Lanny and Rea will greet you and help you feel right at home, and are only a call away should you need assistance or information. In addition to reassuring on-site management and service, Bel Horizon is distinguished by its custom interiors: the striking handcrafted cabinetry, designed by the owner in the French country manner, is partnered with rustic saltillo tiles, screened teak french doors and windows, and an eclectic collection of furniture and artwork (from African carvings to metal wall art). It all combines to provide casual elegance, a home where you can relax and enjoy the best of St. John. The owners of this extraordinarily-designed property vacationed on St John for many years, studying the Caribbean design and architecture of the islands. With an excellent eye for detail, they built this handsome home - a magnificent dream brought to life in one of St. John's most exclusive areas.
